Kayla Simas

My paternal second great-grandparents’ resting place in Long Island, New York (Medium/Kayla Simas)

Eighty years have gone by,
Without a soul to visit.

Perhaps it was too far,
Yet so close, too.

No markings to tell where they lie,
For they didn’t have much money at the time.

It took descendants to search and find;
To visit and give a proper memorial.

Two crosses now stand
Where nothing did before

Bearing the names of people I never met.
Yet, I am here because of them.

It marks as a promise to visit,
And for all to know who lay there.

Eighty years have gone,
But they are not forgotten.
